One year around markets in V4 countries

Mindspace applied for the Visegrad Grand with its former partners from Bratislava and Prague, and got to work together with a new partner from Katowice. The project was a great way to share our experiences of working with markets in urban areas. The main aims were to learn from eachother, promote our knowledge and create a V4 market analysis study.

For our kick-off meeting, we got together in Bratislava, where all the partners introduced themselves and their market projects. Stara Trznica is a great example of market revitalization. We had the opportunity to see recent developments, and take part in a guided tour in the market hall.

In May we went to Prague for our next reunion. The market tour around the city focused on the food market of Manifesto. We learnt about the many markets around the city, traditional and hip alike.

One of the highligts of the project was the common study visit to London. We not jus took part, but got the opportunity to share our experiences in the 10th market conference. More about the conference:

At the beginning of summer, we had the pleasure to go to Valencia for Placemaking Week Europe 2019. One of our founders, Szilvia had a presentation about market revitalization and the work we have been doing around the neighbourhood. We had the chance to meet other placemakers from the V4 region, talk and exchange experiences.

With the coming of autumn, we were getting close to the finish line. In September we visited the Local Initiatives Factory Association in Katowice. They focus on Nikiszowiec, a former coal-mining area in the city, and work on community building. We participated in an NGO festival, where we displayed our “4 Cities 4 Markets” zine on V4 market and neighbourhood revitalization.

The closing event of the project was the fifth Rákóczisquaring in Budapest. We showed our partners around the city’s multiple marketplaces, market halls and special streets, such as the Fővám central market hall or Bartók Béla Boulevard. We had our two-day mini-festival at the market hall and its neighbourhood. We also presented the finished case study about V4 markets.

This project was a great way to put our work with Rákóczi Market Hall into perspective, converse and work with partners around the region who have similar issues. We are grateful to have worked with them in the majority of 2019.
